Intro
The FIFA World Cup is an international soccer tournament where the top national teams from around the world compete to be crowned world champions. This tournament is held every 4 years and is one of the biggest sporting events in the world. Qatar 2022 was a tournament of firsts, the first World Cup ever hosted in the Middle East, the first World Cup played in December to avoid the Gulf summer, and as one of the most widely watched sporting events in history. Five billion people tuned in worldwide for the tournament and 1.5 billion tuned in for the climactic Argentina vs France final.
Goals
The goal was to create a unified and cohesive collection that honored 21 qualifying nations and to translate the heritage and spirit of Argentina, Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Croatia, Ecuador, France, Germany, Japan, Mexico, Morocco, Netherlands, Portugal, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Senegal, South Korea, Spain, Uruguay and the United States. Each jersey had to remain familiar and needed to be instantly recognisable at broadcast distance for the fans. The designs aimed to send a jolt of patriotic pride through their respective supporters.
Process & Strategy
The process started with an in depth research phase that included the analysis of each of the team's historic designs, folklore, and cultural heritage. Once the research was done, the design process shifted towards experimentation and exploration of different motifs that honor the past and resonates with the new generation of fans.
Creative Solution
At the core of this case study was the idea to create a jersey that becomes more than a uniform. The creative solution focused on distilling the essence of each team into a wearable "flag" that captures heritage, pride, and symbolism of what each team stands for.
